Audi’s R8 GT3

Evolved from Audi AG’s ground-breaking aluminium chassised rear-engined R8, launched to great acclaim in 2006, the second generation model - powered by the Volkswagen group’s 5.2-litre 90 degree V10 engine shared with Lamborghini’s later Gallardo and Huracan, instead of the original 4.2-litre V8 - remains among the world’s most engaging, tractable and practical supercars. Announced in 2011, the LMS ultra racing version, designed to meet prevailing FIA GT3 regulations, enhanced the R8’s already phenomenal record of on-track success.

Audi’s illustrious competition history could already be traced back almost 80 years to 1932, when amalgamation with rival German car makers DKW, Horch and Wanderer formed Auto Union AG. Under this banner, advanced Silver Arrow racers - aerodynamic tours de force with mighty rear-mounted V12 and V16 engines - took the world by storm later in the decade, piloted by such intrepid heroes as Bernd Rosemeyer and Hans Stuck.

From 2012, its debut season, the R8 LMS ultra scored the marque’s first victory in the prestigious Nurburgring 24 Hours with Team Phoenix operating as Audi Sport. The squad, in its own name, repeated the feat in 2014 and R8 derivatives have subsequently won the annual showpiece five more times. Over the border in Belgium, Audi teams also won four editions of the Spa 24 Hours between 2011 and 2019, LMS ultra cars prevailing in 2012 and 2014.

With 570bhp on tap, the performance of the factory-built LMS Ultra models was sharpened by a weight reduction over the already impressive GT3 category specification. Lightweight doors and windows were allied to an improved aero package, boasting larger carbon composite wings balanced by complementary front dive planes. Belgian-based Team WRT - founded in the autumn of 2009 by engineer René Verbist (formerly head of VW Motorsport), racer Vincent Vosse and businessman Yves Weerts - won the Spa classic at its second attempt in 2011, cementing its Audi works team status.

Revered among the greatest GT cars in motorsport history, as its stellar results attest, the Audi R8 LMS Ultra has contributed hugely to the Ingolstadt-headquartered marque’s rise to prominence over a golden era. Formula 1-bound Audi’s sports prototypes won the Le Mans 24 Hours 13 times between 2000 and 2014, a total second only to Porsche, which has competed in the French classic continuously since 1951 and famously landed its first victory with a 917 in 1970.

This car, AS42A0FGT3120411

Chassis number AS42A0FGT3120411 was built by Audi Sport in 2012 as a 24 Hour specification Ultra, their latest homologation evolution for the R8 LMS model. Destined for the works WRT team, 0411’s 24H specification meant that it was fitted with a large fuel tank, uprated driveshafts and other details to aid the endurance demands of 24 hour racing.

While completed in 2012, 0411 did not break cover in a racing environment until the 2013 season. As Frank Stippler and Edward Sandström’s regular car in the FIA GT Championship, 0411 was also campaigned by them and Christoph Mies in the Blancpain GT Championship that season.

Beginning the year with a white and red EA Games Fifa livery, 0411 took victory first time out at Nogaro in the FIA GT series. 0411 wore the Fifa livery one more time, and at the Monza 3 Hours for the first Blancpain round, it took a 4th place finish.

Prominent results became a feature of 0411’s contemporary career and at the second FIA GT round at Zolder, it scored a 3rd place with a new matte black and red EA Games Battlefield 4 livery. At the Blancpain Silverstone 3 Hours, another 3rd place was logged.

The Paul Ricard leg of the Blancpain series saw an uncharacteristic DNF, although officially classified in 27th place. A return to form came at the Zandvoort FIA GT round where Stippler and Sandström scored another 3rd place.

Perhaps the crowning race in the GT3 calendar is the Spa 24 Hours, a race of which this car is a three time veteran. 0411’s debut at the Spa 24 Hours came during the 2013 season with drivers Edward Sandström, Mattias Ekström and Marcel Fassler. With WRT being the works Audi team, the German giant drafted in further factory drivers to bolster its efforts in this, the most important of all GT3 races.

Ekström came from DTM where he was already double champion and also brought Red Bull backing with him, which adorned the side of 0411. Fassler was drafted from Audi’s top LMP1 program and his usual seat in the Audi R18 E-tron Quattro. With back to back 2011/2012 overall Le Mans wins to his name, Fassler completed the stunning line up.

However, the balance of performance at Spa held the Audi squad back, with 0411’s all-star line-up only setting 32nd fastest time. In the race, 0411 kept its nose clean and climbed the order in the initial stages. By the 6 hour mark, at which point a classification was taken for Blancpain series points allocation, 0411 was in 8th place. Shortly after, with Fassler in the car, 0411 had contact with a lapped Ferrari at Blanchimont. While the damage was not too extensive, rear wishbone mounts were damaged and retirement from the 24 Hours was forced.

Three weeks later, 0411 was back in action for the next round of the FIA GT series at Slovakia with Stippler and Sandström once again. After qualifying 9th, the duo raced through to a 4th place finish and good points score.

The Nurburgring 1000kms in September signalled the end of the Blancpain GT season, and WRT entered the weekend with Stippler and Mies in contention for the drivers’ championship, while the team themselves were also in range of the teams’ championship victory. René Rast joined the line up for the double length event and set the qualifying time for the team, who lined up 7th on the grid, still hampered by a restrictive BOP.

The 1000km race did not go their way, first they were hampered with a puncture and then contact with a McLaren broke the steering rack. With the retirement scoring 0 points, Stippler and Mies took 5th in the Blancpain Drivers’ Championship while WRT finished 2nd in the Blancpain Teams’ Championship.

At the end of September came the penultimate round of the FIA GT Championship at Navarra in France. Stippler and Sandström set a strong pace in qualifying to line up 2nd on the grid. In the feature race, 0411 raced through to 3rd place and strengthened its 2nd position in the FIA GT Drivers’ Championship while the sister car led the way in the ultra-competitive series, it meant that either one of the WRT cars would now be champion.

The FIA GT title decider came at Baku in late November. Stippler and Sandström were pitched against their team-mates Lauren Vanthoor and Stephan Ortelli for the overall FIA GT Drivers’ Championship. 0411 didn’t quite have the pace of its team-mate and conceded the overall title with a 7th overall position in the main race. It was enough to secure 2nd in the FIA GT Drivers’ Championship for Stippler and Sandström, and 0411 played a significant part in WRT’s victory in the FIA GT Teams’ Championship for the 2013 season.

Following its successes of 2013, 0411 remained with WRT at the opening of the 2014 season although run under the G-Drive Racing banner. Racing in Blancpain, 0411 began the season at Nogaro with drivers Guilvert and Ortelli, finishing 2nd overall. 0411 made its final WRT appearance for G-Drive at the Brands Hatch round of the Blancpain series in May. Driven by Ortelli and Rusinov, it didn’t show the same pace as at Nogaro and finished in 13th.

Life after WRT

0411 was then sold to Czech team ISR Racing in the middle of 2014. Painted in white with navy blue and red detailing, 0411 debuted with ISR at the Spa 24 Hour test in early July for Filip Salaquarda and Fabian Hamprecht.

Having set the 23rd fastest time in the test, the team returned for the main event where they were joined by Marc Basseng. In qualifying for the endurance classic, the ISR Racing team set 29th fastest time with 0411. In the 24 Hours itself, the team fared well and climbed the order with a consistent performance to finish 14th overall, admirable for their first ever race with 0411.

After completing the 2014 Spa 24 Hours, 0411 would not race again until the beginning of the 2015 season. With a full calendar of 16 Blancpain events, competing in both the Sprint and Endurance rounds. Filip Salaquarda would be the main driver, and he was joined by noted GT stars Marco Bonanomi and Frederic Vervisch.

A strong season followed, with 0411 setting fastest time at the Blancpain Misano test and going to claim several top 10 finishes with best results of 4th at the Silverstone 3 Hours and 4th at the season closing Zandvoort Sprint race.

After the 2015 season, ISR Racing sold 0411 to fellow Czech team Duck Racing. Over the proceeding seasons, Duck Racing has campaigned 0411 in both the Gulf Sportscar Championship and ESET Cup GT series, working closely with ISR who are an Audi Sport Customer Racing team. 0411 continued its successful ways, winning the ESET GT3 Endurance championship and often a race winner.

Maintaining 0411 with Audi Sport parts, Duck Racing had the engine rebuilt by WRC Skoda engine builders Vancik Motorsport in early 2023. At the same time, the gearbox was rebuilt ready for the upcoming season, and today both have covered just 1,500km since these works.

The original Audi fitted Bosch DDU 8 dash display remains in place, as do the traction control and ABS elements that are so effective in the R8 LMS Ultra GT3. A further AIM Solo GPS lap timer is fitted along with an AIM SmartCam system which overlays GPS data on a camera feed, a useful driving aid.

Carrying a 2020 Continental fuel cell with validity to October 2025, 0411 retains an Audi Sport carbon seat which is valid to December 2025. An OMP harness set is fitted and valid to December 2028 along with an electronic fire system with service next due in 2026.

0411 is accompanied by its original WRT addressed Audi vehicle handover document, original DMSB safety cage certificate noting the unique number which is retained on the car today, original 2015 RACB Technical Passport, Continental fuel cell certificate and some Audi Sport parts invoices.

A huge spares package is with 0411 including three spare sets of wheels with Michelin tyres, two large flight cases full of spares and running equipment, extensive bodywork, a steering rack, driveshafts, brake spares, gearbox parts, exhausts, wiring loom and equipment such as a Staubli fuel dump churn, airline hose with the air jack lance and set of three wheeled car skates.

With the advent of the already popular GT3 Legends series by Motor Racing Legends, the Masters GT Trophy and further GT3 grids likely to appear in the next few years, 0411 stands as one of the very foremost Audi R8 LMS Ultra GT3s that have ever raced and one of the few works Audi WRT team cars.

Driven by an all-star cast of drivers including Frank Stippler, Edward Sandström, Mattias Ekström, Chris Mies, René Rast, Marcel Fassler, Stephane Ortelli, Frederic Vervisch, Marco Bonanomi and Marc Basseng, there are more than a few 24 hour race wins across the drivers such was the might of Audi Sport.

0411’s 2nd in the 2013 FIA GT Championship is an example of its success at the highest level, furthered by race victory at the opening Nogaro round of the series, and 0411 was a key part of WRT’s FIA GT Teams’ Championship win of the same season.

Benefitting from very long service intervals - 20,000km for a major engine rebuild - the R8 LMS Ultra GT3 was always competitive across different circuits and conditions. A testament to the product built at Ingolstadt, Audi Sport did not have to introduce more expensive engine upgrades throughout the homologation life span and 0411 is the ultimate evolution of first generation R8.

Most recently, 0411 was invited to be part of the GT3 celebration at the 82nd Goodwood Members’ Meeting in April 2025. It proved itself to be very straightforward in terms of running and driving, putting a large grin on the face of its driver!

0411 now waits for its new custodian and a return to the circuit, resplendent in its superb 2013 Spa 24 Hours livery.
